Manga Summary[]
The first civil war to smash the peace that had continued for almost one hundred years. Previously,Patria won a war of independence to escape from the dominion the Old World,Gracia in particular. Thenceforth, peace reigned for almost a hundred years. However,in time, the North , which held the center of government and the site of the largest cities since colonial times, came to dominate the South. As the North worked to develop its economy and technology, it cut down on trade in an effort to monopolize domestic demand. Meanwhile, the South sought growth by acquiring foreign exchange for its mineral resources and agricultural products. A rift grew particularly between the North's capital region, which was the country's political and economic hub , and the Southern cities far from the patronage of the Northern capital were forced to defend themselves. And thus, sparks of conflict smoldered. However, it has not been established what directly led to the Civil War.
The initial points of contention were small in scale, such as Northern suppression of prices for Southern goods and the influx of Southern poor to the North. As the North tightened trade restrictions, the South formed a Confederacy as a measure of resistance. It soon found itself in a state of war with the Northern Union government. The South was less cohesive than the North, but had a large population. It was behind in technology, but ahead in resource. Armed conflict started with small skirmishes across the vast plains set between the two regions, and here and there villages and trading outposts were taken by one side or the other. The flames of the war gradually spread until even cities near the border became battlefields.
In the course of the war, the South developed its technology and polished its military, while the North gradually fell back due to factors such as a shortage of manpower. The front crept slowly north. Greenspring and Fort Locabe fell, and in time the Southern army was on the doorstep of the Northern capital of Newfort. Just as Newfort's capitulation appeared imminent, the most important event in the war occurred: the appearance of the Incarnate Corps. The abrupt arrival of the Incarnates turned the tide at once. Their unearthly power was utilized in storming the South's critical bases, and toppled the South's defenses. The terror of facing enemies unlike any they had ever known and the dizzying turnabout in the situation of the war shocked the Southern leaders. Though the South still had the upper hand, it found victory impossible on a battlefield shared with Incarnates, and so it sued for peace. The North, for its part , had nothing to rely on but the Incarnates, who themselves were unreliable in their powers and were quickly growing exhausted. The North therefore determined that carrying on for the long haul would be too risky and the only feasible option was to negotiate peace.
It had already been nearly ten years since the formation of the Confederate States of Patria, generally considered the staring point of the war. Both side had utterly spent themselves in the quagmire of the war, and as the public felt hopeless and trapped, the war was followed by several years of stagnation.[2]
