While the phenomenon resembles a shapeless black mist, it's actually made up of hordes of small winged insects. By freely coalescing and dispering, they can depict the shapes of people and objects mid-air. Each insect has organs that emit bioluminescence and sound, and through intricate manipulation of these organs, the swarm creates scenes easily mistaken for reality. On the battlefield, however these powers have very little application beyond obscuring the enemy's vision. The Specter's abilites were barely glimpsed during the Civil War, because the subject fell into a coma during an adjustment, the incarnate corps never deployed it.
It was given the professional name "Spector" based on its abilites, but not registered as an Incarnate. Researchers believed that was in a comatose state, when in fact the subject simply had no way to communicate its thoughts, and despite the instability.
