Wayfield, A remote village sinking into a mire, also is Priscilla Howard's hometown.
Summary[]
Wayfield is a village covered in wetlands and deep woods. The vast wetlands impede traffic, lichens that droop from trees block out the sunlight, and rot and moss encroach on wooden houses. The wetlands are themselves difficult to walk on and full of dangerous creatures. While the land is altogether inhospitable, peat mining and very limited finishing opportunities have given the townsfolk just enough industry to support settlement.
Wayfield may have once been a prominent site for peat mining, but the demand for peat, which is considered inferior to coal as an energy source, has gradually fallen and the town has shrunk. Its remoteness seems to have attracted quite a few characters seeking to avoid public attention. As such migrants sought to live invisibly even as established villagers huddled together for survival, there was often tension, and at least one fatal incident is noted to have occurred. Despite all this, the government has been uninclined to assist such a distant village of no economic value.[1]
